Stop spam from tools-drtriagobot
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Hello

As you can see below, I am trying to stop spam from tools-drtriagobot to my private mail address. But even though I am officially listed as the admin, all attempts to do a password reset or unsubscribe from this list just yield error messages stating that I am not on this list! I tried this on the web and via the mail command interfaces.

As you can see from below, meanwhile I tried to get support from (according to [1]):

  • mailman@lists.wikimedia.org
  • mailman-owner@lists.wikimedia.org
  • Ryan (since listed under [2])
  • admintools@lists.wikimedia.org
  • labs-l@lists.wikimedia.org

[2] https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Nova_Resource:Mailman

...so far nobody felt responsible or answered at all to my request!! This is ridiculous and hereby I STRONGLY INSIST in someone taking care of your mailman maillist server installation! STOP THIS SPAM! Thanks!

DrTrigon

Edit: To clarify; I worked on "DrTrigonBot" BUT "drtriagobot" IS NOT RELATED to me, my bot or anything I know or am aware of.

Dear Ryan

As you can see below, I did several attempts to either get my password (tools-drtriagobot-request@lists.wikimedia.org) or report to an admin (mailman-owner@lists.wikimedia.org) that this list is wrong/buggy and does just spam me. So far I got either NO response or mailman told me that I am not on the list. This is kind of stupid.

Can you please help me here?

Thanks

    Dear mailman/admin

Could you please reset the password of this list or - even better - delete the list?
I have never maintained a package/tool called drtriagobot and as far as I am aware such a tool does not even exist. At the moment this list seams to be a source of spam mail only.

    Thanks and greetings

Wikimedia-Mailing-lists is an archived project. Perhaps you meant to file this under Wikimedia-Mailing-lists?

admintools@ isn't going to help you, BTW.

Actually, are you sure these are coming through a mailman installation at all?

@Krenair yes this is Mailman related it seems, a list exists at least.

@DrTrigon see below in quotes.

No emails have ever been accepted, so you're talking about -owner spam. At which point, the password is not recoverable and subscription without the initial password is also not possible.

As you can see from below, meanwhile I tried to get support from (according to [1]):

The mailman addresses are not used for support and are entirely internal. No one monitors these at all. Ryan has also not been around for several months now, which is unfortunate. The two lists you mentioned are also not within scope entirely of Mailman, only this bug tracker is, technically.

People do take care of the installation, namely operations and myself - yet we've not received any requests or contact in order to look at the matter until now.

Could you please reset the password of this list or - even better - delete the list?

Per that, I have deleted the list. I'll follow up on how/where it was requested, if at all before closing the issue.

JohnLewis triaged this task as Medium priority.

I can find no request or evidence of the list being requested or created. Likely I shall assume it was an out-of-band request directly to Ryan or someone else who had the list creator password/master password.

If an admin could reset the password or delete the list, we would finally know!
Furthermore I don't like beeing listed as admin there while the list tells me I am not even subscribed. Something is clearly buggy there.

I was quite involved into wikipedia etc myself in the past and as you can see it was not obvious on how to get support here. I tried what was mentioned on the mailman overview page, so I would recommend to put a note there, that mentions how report issues on phabricator.

When I tried to figure out what this mysterious "operations" is, I found Ryan. He did not feel responsible, but poined me to phabricator - that was useful, at least.

Per that, I have deleted the list. I'll follow up on how/where it was

Now this was helpful, finally! Thanks! Thank you very much!!!

I am very courious how this happened as well.

Thanks for your explanations and help! Greetings
