Change the e-mail address associated with my Wikipedia username
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

I have two users on Wikipedia created before there was common sign-on across different language Wikipedias.
On the Estonian Wikipedia, my user is this: https://et.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kasutaja:Peep
The global / English user is https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:PeepP

I am not able to log in to my Estonian username as I do not know anymore which e-mail address it's attached to. That address is probably not functional anymore.

Can you change the e-mail address on the Estonian username (Peep) to be peep.pullerits@gmail.com? The accounts link to each other using interlanguage links, that should be proof that I'm the same user.

Event Timeline

Sorry for delay. Can work with @Jalexander on this.

Hi @PeepP - do you have access to the account User:PeepP?

It will unfortunately be very hard to prove the older account is yours if you no longer have access to the old email address. I would recommend that, if you still have access to PeepP, that you use this account.

The problem is that I would like to edit the content on that old user page - including removing some content.

Is the fact that both user accounts have links going to each other not enough to prove that I am the owner of both accounts?

Can you check if my Estonian account has any personal details such as full name or birthday? If yes, couldn't I prove my identity by sending in private a photo of personal identification?

I can't speak for the local community of course, but I can't imagine there would be a problem with you just removing that information.

I'll confer with my Trust and Safety colleagues and get back to you.

While we wait for T&S. If you are unable to log in at all we can bump this to High.

I think you misunderstood my intention - I am not worried about my personal details on the account.

My interest is in getting access to that account so I can edit the user page. I also would like to start contributing to the Estonian Wikipedia, but keep my user account history, rather than doing it from a brand new account.

My idea was to use the personal details on that account to prove my identity so that you would be happy with changing the e-mail address on that account.

I'm still waiting for my colleagues to answer (this is an especially busy time, so I am sorry for the extended wait).

You can edit the userpage using a new account if you make the link to the old account apparent. This also allows you to "carry over" the contributions, if not technically (as in, the physical contribs wouldn't move, but the link to the old account would be apparent).

My idea was to use the personal details on that account to prove my identity so that you would be happy with changing the e-mail address on that account.

I can look, but would probably need to check with my colleagues whether this would be a wise thing to do.

@PeepP - after discussion with colleagues we've decided there's enough evidence to confirm identity. I have sent a password reset to your email. Please use it to log in.

Thank you for your patience!

I was able to log in again, thanks so much!
