next-gen.biz to edge-online.com
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

Many next-gen.biz links in the Wayback machine rightly redirect to edge-online.com links.

See https://web.archive.org/web/20120121132746/http://www.next-gen.biz/news/reeves-no-pal-80gb-ps3-plans, which goes to https://web.archive.org/web/20120121144628/http://www.edge-online.com/news/reeves-no-pal-80gb-ps3-plans . I propose that your bot either includes these archive links despite the 301 error or allows them to be pointed to the edge-online.com links. I used the former approach on this link, as I could not point it to a different domain.

Cheers.

What do you mean you could not point it to a different domain?

I suppose I was too specific; it's really just that the URLs don't match. In this case, it's that the TDLs (next-gen.biz vs. edge-online) don't match, even though the rest of the URLs do. It might be work to program in exceptions and I suppose you're already handling http redirects, it just would be nice if it automatically fixed these instead of marking them dead.

I'm still not sure what you're trying to do. All I get is that one archive redirects to another, but I'm not clear what you want to do.

It is not possible to add a link to an archived version which is not a snapshot of the exact same URL as the original weblink. This is however not a bug, but a feature necessary e.g. to ensure that people do not add "replacement sources" which might work in one context but not the other.

If a live version of the same website exists under a different domain, the dead link should be replaced. If the same information can be found in an archive snapshot of a different URL, the link can be replaced as well (perhaps using a bot if the number of links is large). However, all these cases require human oversight and need to take a link's context into account. That's beyond the scope of IABot.
