It is common practice to add @2x in the tile URL to get a 512x512 px image for retina displays.
I think it used to work on maps.wikimedia.org but now these requests both return a 256x256 px image:

Confirmed, it's a regression. The maps.wikimedia.org test page is requesting retina and getting regular tiles.
Just noting that if we were getting no tile instead of the wrong resolution tile I'd consider this an unbreak now. The current impact is that users on high resolution displays get fuzzy maps.
