Description

Steps to Reproduce

Get ubuntu-18.10-desktop-amd64.iso
Boot Ubuntu 18.10 by choosing "Try Ubuntu without installing", making sure to select Português do Brasil (aka pt-BR)
Open Firefox 63.0 (64-bit) and start a new translation from English to Portuguese using ContenTranslation (V2)
Attempt to type the translation of some paragraphs containing accented letters

Expected behaviour
The user should be able to finish the translation, with all accented letters where they should be.

Expected behaviour
Sometimes (I don't know what triggers this) it is not possible to type accented letters. E.g. if you want to type é and press ' followned by e, none of these key presses do anything. No character is shown. No sound is played (to signal there is some error). No feedback at all. The user only notices something is wrong after finishing typing and seeing half the letters (or their diacritics) are missing in the translation.

Workaround

Click in the original text (or change the focus to another browser tab)
Click in the translation field again

Thanks for the report. Several questions:

Does the same work if you edit an article in Visual Editor?

Which operating system and browser are you using?

Which keyboard layout are you using in your operating system? How do you type diacritics—keys with shift? Long-press (common on Mac)? Dead keys (common in French and Spanish, I'm not sure about Portuguese)? Some other method?

I was not able to reproduce the bug using Visual Editor (on Firefox).
The problem happens with Firefox 63.0.3 (64-bit), on Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS.
This is the keyboard layout:

When I want to type e.g. "ação", I type the following 5 keys:

When I want to type e.g. "Ônibus", I type the following keys:

SHIFT
^ (still holding SHIFT)
O (at this point I see the letter Ô)
n
i
b
u
s

Hello, thanks for the detailed explanation.

I tested on Firefox 63.0.3 (64-bit), on Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS, with the keyboard layout "Português (Brasil)". I was able to type both "ação" and "Ônibus" in the way you described. But to do it, I had to set a Compose Key, as explained here [AskUbuntu.com]. Does that work for you?

I don't get it: why would I need to change a configuration in the Ubuntu to make something work in ContentTranslation, if it already works in other places? And why would this happen intermittently and fix itself when I click in the left column (original text) and then click on the right column (translation) again?

@KartikMistry and I tested this with a recent version of Debian, which is similar to Ubuntu, with Firefox 63.0.3, with the "Portuguese (Brazil IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad)" keyboard, and we were able to type "ação" and "Ônibus" exactly as you describe.

This is a very strange problem. @He7d3r , can you please tell me the name of the keyboard layout that appears in your input (or keyboard) settings in the system settings?

(I agree that you shouldn't have to change your keyboard settings if they work correctly in other apps and sites.)
