request: extra view of template pages showing as them as when transcluded and substituted
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Author: 7words.sg

Description:
I realise the summary is very clumsy, but it's the only description I can think of for what I'm requesting.

Recently English Wikipedia has been hit by a vandal that vandalises the day's featured article by not putting penis
images not on the article itself, but by putting them within <includeonly> ... </includeonly> tags in templates
transcluded onto the article.

What I propose is: Please add an extra feature to show a template as it appears when transcluded; ideally the feature
would be able to show the template both when transcluded and when substituted. This extra view of the template could be
accessible via a new tab next to the "history" link.

Advantage of this enhancement: It would be a quick way to check whether a template has suspicious includeonly
stuff/breakage. This is useful for not only combatting sneaky vandalism but also for people doing template editing to
inspect their work for breakage.

Hi Leung, I just have read your request for the first time. This feature was actually implemented a couple of versions back (can't remember when exactly).

Now when you edit a template you have a field at the bottom "Preview page with this template" that gives you the possibility to see the template in action.
