Phantom unread notifications when users are subscribed to objects they are not allowed to view
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Upstream: https://secure.phabricator.com/T8953

Phabricator tells me that I have 8 unread notifications, and also that I have no unread notifications. Yesterday the number was 6 and increased to 7 and then 8 today.

I did not try clicking the "Mark All Read" link in the popup (which shows no unread notifications either), since that would probably wipe any data which might allow tracking down the root cause of this weirdness.

Up to 9 now. Perhaps I am somehow getting notifications for something I am not allowed to view?

@matmarex, do you mind reporting this task to upstream directly? It's clearly a bug, but if we report it one day, chances that that you will have wiped out your notifications and/or that the maintainers will come with questions that only you will be able to reply.

PS: my unread notifications are correct, fwiw.

This happened to me also, on June 3rd, and I commented on IRC http://bots.wmflabs.org/~wm-bot/logs/%23wikimedia-dev/20150603.txt

And after some minutes, it went to normal itself (maybe after I received a new notification)

I could file it upstream, but I imagine they will find it hard to debug without having access to this installation.

I'm up to 20 phantom notifications, by the way. :P

And after some minutes, it went to normal itself (maybe after I received a new notification)

I received email and web notifications in the meantime (someone giving out a token) and it didn't resolve itself for me.

Gaaaaahhhhh!!! This is annoying!
I changed all options which were set to "Notify" at
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/
but I still have to click on this icon and "Mark All as read" every single day.
Can I disable that icon somewhere else?

  • Email: You receive an email, and get a notification, but the notification is marked automatically as "read"
  • Notification: You get a notification and it doesn't get marked as read unless you visit that specific task
  • Ignore: You don't get a notification

So... to don't have to mark them as read, simply change them to email or ignore, but don't set them to notification.

Ciencia_Al_Poder, are you describing the expected behaviour or a specific test you performed? Helder is saying that "Ignore" doesn't achieve what expected.

I don't think so:

I changed all options which were set to Notify at

I don't have any option set to "Notify". Most are still set to "Email", but I set these to "Ignore":

  • A task's owner changes.
  • A task's subscribers change.
  • A task's associated projects change.
  • One of the tasks a task is blocked by changes status.

So, I have no idea why I'm getting notifications, and I have not idea which action is triggering them, since I'm never able to find the tasks which have unread notifications.

Up to 53 invisible unread notifications, by the way. Curiously, it was 54 for a while and then decreased by one.

Tokens always add notifications. https://secure.phabricator.com/T7468
Pastes did previously https://secure.phabricator.com/T7786 (now fixed/configurable)

Thanks to @chasemp and @Krenair I learned that my phantom notifications come from tasks T102767, T102587, T102766, T102589, to which I am apparently subscribed, but do not have permission to view. So my original guess was correct ("Perhaps I am somehow getting notifications for something I am not allowed to view?").

Aklapper renamed this task from I have 8 unread notifications, yet I have no unread notifications to Phantom unread notifications when users are subscribed to objects they are not allowed to view.Jul 30 2015, 9:44 PM

This is happening to me again, eh.

Did they stop? I saw a these occasionally...

I saw one too not so long ago.

Assuming this is fixed as per last comment (thanks for the followup!).

Please reopen this task if this still happens to you nowadays in Wikimedia Phabricator.
