install / setup tungsten for temp use - wikimania 2015 video transcoding
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

This is the task for the setup and deployment for tungsten as the Wikimania 2015 video transcoding host.

At this time, we aren't certain how the video's will be delivered to WMF, but all past years have been via disk. (External or internal is fine, as we have external drive enclosures for the latter.)

  • - mgmt dns entries created/updated (assumed done from before)
  • - system bios and mgmt setup and tested (assumed done from before)
  • - network switch setup (port description & vlan) (assumed done from before)
  • - production dns entries created/updated (just hostname, no asset tag entry)
  • - install-server module updated (dhcp and netboot/partitioning) (was still in there)
  • - install OS - Jessie - DB partitioning layout (raid10)
  • - accept/sign puppet/salt keys
  • - service implementation

Service implementation may not include full puppetization, as this is a temp host. Once all videos have been transcoded and relocated to permanent storage, this host will be reclaimed.

Notes for why this is a stand alone server are in the initial request, T106112

There is an ongoing discussion on what vlan this can live in, installation cannot progress until resolved.

I'm happy to install this system once the import process (and thus what vlan this has to sit on) are determined.

One option is to have this be a test bed for T95185, other is to make it a regular machine with prod access.

If this requires shell access / scp to terbium for actual upload, then this should just be a machine in prod. Not sure about the security implications of that, however?

@Matanya @Legoktm would this require scp / rsync access to terbium?

Yes, or any other host that lets you run maintenance scripts (e.g. tin). terbium is preferred though since that's where most scripts are run from.

We should just install an OS on tungsten. The "bare metal in labs" discussion seems to just have distracted.

One that lets it talk rsync over ssh to terbium.eqiad.wmnet.

Anyone wants to take a shot at installing the OS here?

did these videos get transcoded already? or is this host still needed, I wonder?

I see nothing that would say it's done. No replies on the mailing list request, nothing here on the ticket or the linked parent.
Did something make you think it's not needed anymore?

Matanya claimed this task.

The video team hired by Wikimedia Mexico had encoded and uploaded the videos directly to commons. This task is now moot, closing.

@Matanya thanks for the update. ok!. we are going to reclaim tungsten
