DNS request for wikimedia.org
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

We will need to add new DNS records to the wikimedia.org domain for Major Gifts' new events tool (see T107059, T101191, T104357).

The DNS additions needed are as follows:

benefactorevents.wikimedia.org IN CNAME trilogytools1.azurewebsites.net
eventdonations.wikimedia.org IN CNAME contrib-wi-10109-10472-20140728-1682402186.us-east-1.elb.amazonaws.com

**Edit: Adjusting priority to High as event has been scheduled for 10/1. We want to send out invites as close to 2 months away from the event as possible

Note that domain #1 ("benefactorevents") was previously events.wikimedia.org. Agreed to change domain on 7/29**

@CCogdill_WMF - I've updated the task description with the DNS additions we need for the Major Gifts' event tool.

Change 227705 had a related patch set uploaded (by John F. Lewis):
add event{donations} CNAMEs for Major Gift

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/227705

The above patch should add the needed CNAMEs.

Two notes:

  • Why can't we have one domain for both? Polluting our namespace like that doesn't sound great.
  • "events" also sounds a bit generic — especially under our global movement domain (wikimedia.org). For example, shouldn't one expect to find resources about Wikimania or our hackathons there? If this is major gifts related, why can't the name be something that refers to that activity in particular?

@faidon:

We need both domains because the event pages and donation processing are separate systems. We don't have any flexibility here.

"events" also sounds a bit generic — especially under our global movement domain (wikimedia.org). For example, shouldn't one expect to find resources about Wikimania or our hackathons there? If this is major gifts related, why can't the name be something that refers to that activity in particular?

From a marketing perspective, this was the obvious domain to go with, especially since it was not yet used. Some of the events run through this tool won't be fundraising events, but donor cultivation events, so we don't want to call it something as obvious as "fundraisingevents" for example.

That said, if you have a suggestion that @CaitVirtue and Ops approve of, please offer it. I just want to stress again (as I did in T107059) that we need to be able to use this tool in the next 2 weeks. I went through the approval process for the two domain names in T104357 so I'm wary of moving backwards.

The event date wasn't planned when I originally created this task, so I'm going to edit the description and priority to show that the event is going to be on 10/1, and invitations need to go out soon.

+1, please do not grant use of this subdomain to fundraising/major gifts exclusively.

I agree that events.wikimedia.org is too generic for this purpose, and prone to create confusion.

I'm happy to propose alternatives. Where can I learn more about the new sites?

A first idea based on the little information available here: donors.wikimedia.org (precise, flexible, and self-explanatory; it falls entirely in the Advancement department domain without interfeering in any other domain within the Wikimedia movement).

eventdonations.wikimedia.org is fine.

@CaitVirtue and I just checked in and we are willing to change the events.wikimedia.org domain to benefactorevents.wikimedia.org. I am going to update the task description to reflect this.

Are there any other blockers to complete this task?

Now that we've selected a new domain that is more specific to fundraising (benefactorevents.wikimedia.org), can we add the DNS records as requested? I'm not sure who would own this task so I don't know who to ping directly.

add benefactorevents & eventsdonations CNAMEs for Major Gift
