Sending email to create tasks doesn't work for me
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Upstream: https://secure.phabricator.com/T6799

At the bottom of the "Description" box in "Create New Task", Phabricator says

You can also create tasks by sending an email to: task@phabricator.wikimedia.org

I sent email from mah@nichework.com (which I've listed as my primary address here) and my mail relay handed it off to polonium.wikimedia.org (the SMTP origin for phabricator email):

Nov  4 10:49:07 nospam postfix/smtpd[32316]: 4AE3F5E3F9: client=localhost[127.0.0.1]
Nov  4 10:49:07 nospam postfix/cleanup[32002]: 4AE3F5E3F9: message-id=<87egtjarv8.fsf_-_@flynn.nichework.com>
Nov  4 10:49:07 nospam postfix/qmgr[19571]: 4AE3F5E3F9: from=<mah@nichework.com>, size=2931, nrcpt=1 (queue active)
Nov  4 10:49:10 nospam postfix/smtp[32090]: 4AE3F5E3F9: to=<task@phabricator.wikimedia.org>,
   relay=polonium.wikimedia.org[208.80.154.90]:25, delay=3.1, delays=0.04/0/0.34/2.7, dsn=2.0.0,
   status=sent (250 OK id=1XlgLz-00055v-Oa
Nov  4 10:49:10 nospam postfix/qmgr[19571]: 4AE3F5E3F9: removed

I haven't received any response, nor has the web UI shown any update for 45 minutes.

I saw this email get through and never saw action from it. I talked to upstream and removed some legacy config. I'm not honestly sure if that fixed it, or if the act of apply and restarting etc did.

But for now T1081

This appears to be working.

Qgil triaged this task as Medium priority.Nov 5 2014, 11:15 AM
Qgil added a project: Phabricator.

still not working. Log msg from handoff this AM:

Nov  5 08:23:18 nospam postfix/smtp[20577]: 59DC95E3A5: to=<task@phabricator.wikimedia.org>,
     relay=polonium.wikimedia.org[208.80.154.90]:25, delay=1.8, delays=0.05/0/0.83/0.94, dsn=2.0.0,
     status=sent (250 OK id=1Xm0YP-0002oF-B5)
Qgil lowered the priority of this task from Medium to Low.Nov 7 2014, 9:25 AM
Qgil added a subtask: T1143: Testing T1077.
Qgil closed subtask T1143: Testing T1077 as Invalid.
Qgil subscribed.

Works for me: T1143: Testing T1077

I realize this works for most people so it isn't a high priority. Could someone who has access to the logs (@chasemp? @Dzahn?) look to see if my emails are actually received (I've provided the information that should be in your log messages.

@MarkAHershberger

hey man, sorry this sucks. I will take a look when I get a chance. It may be awhile though, but I promise I'm flagging to try to not forget.

@Hexmode so i don't see your email address appear anywhere in /var/log/exim4/mainlog on host iridium (the phabricator prod host) but i DO see it in the same log on polonium (the wikimedia MX)

Just sent a reply to this:

Anybody having an idea how to proceed here / what else to investigate?

Have their been other reports or is it all from this one email and this one domain? It's weird

It would help if you would post logs from your side that show what happens when my server hands off. You should be able to grep for "1XpUaM-000AUs-Ni". If you need real-time production, let's set up a time to meet.

Another attempt to send mail to create tasks. First from mah@nichework.com:

@MarkAHershberger can you test against http://secure.phabricator.org , please? For instance, trying to create this very same task there. This way we will know whether this is a Phabricator problem or something specific for our setup.

secure.phabricator.org doesn't resolve for me.

ah, but secure.phabricator.com does

Aklapper updated the task description. (Show Details)
Aklapper moved this task from Backlog to Upstreamed on the Phabricator (Upstream) board.

Upstreamed for now, but the upstream issue seems different. They have emails going to "bugs@" and that conflicts with a user named "bugs". We have emails going to "task@" and no "task" user.

Also, I get failure messages via email from them and not from wmf's phabricator.

Note that upstream problem is resolved.

There, the problem was a user named "bugs" that conflicted with the "bugs@" email address. There is no "task" user here.

In T85156 you created a task via email...

I came here to say this :) Is the reply for the new task being nulled or trashbinned somewhere when returning?

@MarkAHershberger: Seeing the last two comments, is this still a problem?

Appears to be working. T89241. Thanks for all your help!
