Any help in the interim towards restoring the now-defunct Gadget (below) to working order would be greatly appreciated as well.

It would probably be much less work to have someone simply fix your gadget which did this.

I figured as much when I found the same request lingering from 2014 for Commons, but thought it best to go through the motions just in case.

Fwiw... if anyone is interested in fixing the gadget in question, its

I'm pretty sure its the deprecated sajax thing that finally killed it (but I've been wrong before).

The deprecated sajax thing's support will be removed in 1.26wmf18 (which hasn't made it to production wikis yet). The recent changes related to Gadgets and ResourceLoader is what made this broke probably.

Forgive my ignorance, but why are they more work? Is it likely these will ever be implemented? If not, could we have a note at MediaWiki to highlight this?

Extensions need to go through https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Review_queue before being deployed to Wikimedia wikis. This could take anything from weeks to months and would need someone interested to respond to the reviews and improve the extension.

Replace sajax_init_object() with new XMLHttpRequest()

That should go a long way to fixing it...

Some deprecated API calls, but they should still work for now

Also, don't edit the description to add new different requests, put it as a comment :)

If there is still interest in this extension, please see my comment at T145966#3382152 (Basically, extension needs to be modernized. Also be good if usecase was clarified)
