Nighttime display option - Feature Request
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

I do much of my online reading in the evening, in the last few years mostly on my iPad. The iBooks and Kindle iOS apps both have options to reduce text background light intensity/blue light, which works great. I have submitted a feature request for an iOS nighttime option to Apple but am not expecting it soon if at all, since it has been requested by others. Since I spend a lot of time reading Wikipedia, I am hoping this feature could be added directly to the Mediawiki software. It would be great if you could add and option to change the background color to reduce the overall intensity especially blue light similar to the e-reader nighttime modes. Mediawiki already does something similar to the Main_Page sections with blue/green backgrounds. A reference for feature motivation is the Windows/MAC app f.lux (https://justgetflux.com/news/2014/12/22/study.html). This is more complicated than needed for a web page but highlights the issue and solution. Thanks in advance

Thanks for taking the time to report this!

Which project is this about? The Wikipedia Application on some mobile platform (which one)? Or are you looking at Wikimedia websites in your browser on your mobile platform?

When iPhones first released I used several of the third party apps to access Wikipedia due to rendering for the small screen. After the Wikipedia web site mobile version appeared, I just used the mobile web site directly. I was actually unaware that Wikimedia has built an iOS app in the interim. I would be OK with either Implementing directly on the web page or within the apps.
On the web page initially seems like the broadest solution, but Windows/MAC/Linux users can already use f.lux so there is already a solution for laptops/desktops. I do not know the details/risks of creating a new mode that would affect all rendering or potentially cause very broad UI issues.
Since Wikimedia has already built iOS and Android apps this seems like a more localized solution that would take advantage of any OS/device capabilities, like the ones already used by iBooks/Kindle.
I checked out the Wikipedia app and now plan to use it on my iPad/iPhone, so would recommend this change to the iOS and Android Wikipedia apps. Thanks

Apple now supports a feature called Night Shift which support low/blue light across the OS.
