Add the word "login" to all Phabricator pages
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

It took me 10 minutes to find where to login. I almost gave up. I scrolled up and down the Phabricator task page I happened to be on. I went to the Phabricator home page. I clicked many buttons and links on the page. Finally, I clicked the arrow at the top right, and was able to login. None of the icons at the top of Phabricator pages have tooltips. See related task: T95233 "Most of the VE editing toolbar buttons are unlabeled icons, which can reduce usability. Some are without tooltips, too."

Yeah, it's not always obvious to find. I'm tempted to mark this as a duplicate of T87552.

Note that the frontpage provides a prominent link to the "Phabricator Help". The first item on that page covers how to create an account.

Every little added step of difficulty and annoyance causes both short and longterm editors to leave Wikipedia, or to edit less. Thus the continuing decline in total monthly edits, and stagnation or decline in the number of active editors.

I read T87552. I am surprised that no one suggested the obvious; use the word "login" instead of an icon. There are many features on many sites that I have stopped using because of this tendency to substitute icons for text links. I just don't have the time to learn and relearn icons and formatting languages. Such as this latest formatting language in these comment forms. Took me long enough to learn a bit about Bugzilla comment formatting.

I suggest spending a few million dollars and creating a new bug filing system based on MediaWiki formatting. People worldwide would probably use it on many websites. Because MediaWiki markup is understood by millions of people.

Feel free to do that. :) But that might be T29852 instead...

I also had a few moments of confusion today while trying to log in here - I didn't recognize that top-right icon as a "login" icon. I'd support adding a little text "Login" label next to this icon. I generally find that labeled icons are more accessible and user-friendly than unlabeled icons, helping a broader variety of users find what they need more quickly. Thanks!
