[Epic] Update official Wikimedia press kit with accurate numbers
Open, NormalPublic

Description

We have inconsistent and often outdated statistics all over our comms materials, job openings etc. (number of wikis, number of articles, pageviews, uniques, rank etc). The deliverable for this task is (1) updated numbers for Wikimedia's official press kit that we all agree upon and (2) a proposed process to revisit on a regular basis.

This is assigned to @ezachte Moving it to In Progress column. Please keep us up to date on the outcome

@ezachte this hasn't seen any update in a while, is there a status update or shall we close this?

Since early Dec 2015 there is a new chart on 'Active wikis' which will help us to assess a good cut-off point.

I will confer with Leila on how to proceed.

Update: Erik and I met today and discussed this in more details. We will continue working on this card, and update this card with pointers and documentation as they become relevant.

@Heather:

Some background: Erik and I are working on a list of metrics and qualifiers for the Comms team. We need your help to make sure we do the work that is useful for you.

At the moment, we have some questions about the industry ranking we use in our communications. Some years back, we used Alexa, then we switched to comScore, and now we don't use either. We know that at the moment we don't want to go back to comScore since some of the numbers they report for Wikimedia sites are significantly different than the values we retrieve from our computations. We also know that comparing Wikimedia traffic with other top web properties is not necessarily useful. For example, is it more useful to compare and rank Wikipedia traffic with NYTimes and Encyclopedia Britanica, or with bing? These conversations have lead us to a two stage process with some questions for you:

  1. We know that in order to be able to compare our wikis with other websites, we need to use a common service used in industry. We are not sure what service suites our needs best. Is it going to be Alexa, QuantCast, etc.? In order to answer this question, we will need your help for letting us know which services are used frequently in industry, and we will have to test them to see if the way they compute certain metrics that are potentially desirable to us is something we can rely on using to report wikimedia rankings in our communications.
  1. What should we use to rank Wikimedia sites with other sites? We used to focus on unique visitors but that was problematic.
  1. What websites should we compare Wikimedia sites with? For example, should we compare wikipedia.org with bing? or is it more reasonable to compare it with NYTimes or Encyclopedia Britanica?

We're leaving these comments here to not loose track of the things we would like to discuss with you. I'm going to request a meeting with you so we can walk through these together and hopefully converge to a solution for moving forward with the next steps. :)

Hi Folks -- this task lines up with work reading is doing with Comms on metrics. I'd like these efforts to be aligned as they are critical to the how the Reading team measures and communicates its impact.

thanks,

-Toby

I contend the notion that we need to "compare ourselves" . That makes sense if you are competing for a client base in advertising or goods which we are not.

  1. We know that in order to be able to compare our wikis with other websites, we need to use a common service used in industry.

We can report our "position in the overall ranking" according to say Alexa (which unilke comscore discloses its methodology for measuring traffic) but now, our metrics are our own and are not really comparable to any other site.

  1. What should we use to rank Wikimedia sites with other sites? We used to focus on unique visitors but that was problematic.

We should report on the measures we use internally to asses our projects: pageviews and unique devices. We, literally, cannot compare ourselves to services that you need to be logged in to access.

I think we do not need to overthink these metrics as much.
