point wikilovesmonuments.org ns to wmf
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

As a repeat of T70736 the MX entry for wikilovesmonuments.org needs to be changed. To make changes like this easier in the future lets delegate this domain to ns*.wikimedia.org .

Questions:

  • @faidon do you think this would be an improvement over the current way?
  • Should SOA email be changed to hostmaster.wikimedia.org. ?
  • .net and .com are only redirects to .org ; their MX is currently not handled at wikimedia.org if we also move those:
    • Are any mailboxes current configured?
    • Assuming none, what do for MX / mail hosting at wikimedia.org to be good netizens?

Steps:

  • No open questions.
  • ns*.wikimedia.org serves wikilovesmonuments.org with the correct content
  • @MasinAlDujaili switches the email in SOA (hostmaster.wikilovesmonuments.org. -> hostmaster.wikimedia.org.) and NS over to the same values that are in the operations/dns.git

adding Jacob Rogers (legal) to some domain related tickets

These are the current settings for not only wikilovesmonuments.org but .net and .com. At the moment, we use the nameservers provided by Domainfactory.

But there are options to change this to something under control of WMF if we want to. As I didn't do anything like this before, give me precise instructions _what_ I should change.

Repeating @faidon's comment from the gerrit change

Why are we not owning this domain? I don't think we should be hosting domains that we do not own. Pointing records elsewhere is OK, but only if legal is OK with it.

@Jrogers-WMF, is legal OK with the above ?

I discussed this with @JanZerebecki in person during the dev summit. I maintain that we should only be handling domains that we own, mainly for technical reasons (based on past experience of dealing with e.g. WLM specifically) — but also because I don't really see the reason for the WMF *not* owning such domains.

Yes, @faidon convinced me during the dev summit that it is much less work to have these on selected registrars and with ops having access there to make changes. However moving the domains is organizationally a bit more work. I will not be pushing this for now.

I guess, to transfer WMF legal needs to be willing to host all WLM domains, the WLM organizers need to OK this and probably someone at WMDE needs to OK it.
Also either legal needs to answer T118468#1955932 or the website needs to also move to the WMF cluster.

adding @Slaporte for legal

wikilovesmonuments.org is a bit special for being the one for the international team, but note that for many domains (eg. wikilovesmonument.CCTLD), the logical thing is that the wmf does not own them but the relevant chapter. Yet, they may be used in otrs anyway.

I'd say the problem is actually in the wmf changing the hostnames of the mx servers (they are the machine names) instead of using generic ones that can be updated.

Change 252703 abandoned by Mark Bergsma:

Obsolete

It seems this ticket should be closed as rejected based on the comments above where Jan as the task author said he has been convinced by Faidon to not do this and Faidon said we should only handle domains we actually own. We still don't own this and haven't heard from legal or WMDE and Jan isn't at WMDE anymore.

Still adding @CRoslof for his information .. in case WMF wants to take over the WLM domain names. In that case we can always reopen here.
