Bootstrap 4 is an example where a Less variable file might be a problem.
But we shouldn't stop at at Less variables file so or so, given the future of CSS, there should probably one base file (in our case a Less file containing the variables for now) and a task runner/cron job/younameit which just translates this file into the other formats (CSS vars, Sass vars) etc.
