Hitting backspace will select the table but leave you with an empty paragraph still in place.

The merged tasks may not immediately sound related, but in all of them, the problem is trying to remove a ContentBranchNode (e.g. paragraph, heading, preformatted) immediately following a focusable BranchNode (e.g. template, table, image, reflist).
