Is it that hard to copypaste just QID? On desktop you've got to just double click it on URL and press Ctrl + C.
There are many situations when you can't copy a clean QID, for example when I browse through Wikipedia articles and then i just copy full wikidata item URL, then paste it in WD Merge popup and cut first part of URL until QID....woo, boring and tiring
And for me this is the most common method to act
I added a new feature to the Merge.js gadget back in 2013 precisely to avoid copy-pasting URLs...
@Ricordisamoa, sometimes I browse pages in 2-3 Wikipedias (in different linguistic versions) simultaneously, trying to find pairs of pages to connect them in WD, and then copying URL of WD items and pasting them in another Item to merge looks most secure action preventing you to do accidentally unwanted merge.

This was done over a year ago in https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?diff=1459368065 for the merge gadget and https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?diff=1459489234 for the move gadget.
