MediaWiki,Wikiversity, Wikispecies logos should be updated for consistency
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

The WikiSpecies logo has some gradients that should be removed and replaced with the actual green-blue-red colour palette to be consistent with the other flat logos already created, such as Incubator, Commmons, Meta, etc.

The Wikiversity logo should have the current blue of the official colour palette, #006499.

The MediaWiki logo should be flatted for reasons up above, and also use a flat yellow colour (looks like an official one hasn't been decided yet). The brackets should also be the #006499 blue.

Which logos you talking about? (So people can look at correcting these)

I will agree that the Wikispecies logo looks very dated and washed-out. It would be interesting to get a new logo designed and put it to the community there for consideration.

@codynguyen1116: Is there a policy to use flat logos only? Could you point to that one?

@Aklapper There's no policy, but there should be. The Wikimedia Logo Design has a visual guideline, but it mostly applies to Wikipedia. https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Visual_identity_guidelines

(The only thing that could apply to every logo except Wikipedia is that the typography used is Gill Sans, which should also replace the typeface in MediaWiki and WikiSpecies.)

@Peachey88
All the logos appear at https://www.wikimedia.org/ and https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_trademarks, but I'll show direct links also (including the others for comparison)

@TTO I agree :) +1

Do you mean that all logos should use only Gill Sans?

@Danny_B
Yes, or at least use the same typeface. We're already using Gill Sans as the typography in our logos so we should make it consistent with every other logo. The reason I say consistency is important is because:

  1. It avoids confusion.
  2. It's a wikimedia project like every other wikimedia project.
  3. It helps strengthen the Wikimedia Foundation branding - It gives more of the feel of that "unity".
  4. It promotes professionalism.

@Ricordisamoa Hmm didn't know that existed, it looks great though. That should be the official one that's used the most +1

IIRC, this has been discussed extensively over the past 13 years or so, with the general conclusion being that this would be a bad idea. Also, Phabricator is really the wrong place for this discussion.

Please take a look at the following link from 2006, for an interesting demonstration of the problems with "consistency" in logos: https://web.archive.org/web/20151009040827/https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benutzer:Julian~dewiki

If you still want to try and push for this, start a proposal on Meta (preferably after researching past discussions and arguments), but I recommend closing this task. Phabricator isn't the place for this.

Logos are being reviewed as part of https://mediawiki.org/wiki/Desktop_improvements

If any changes are desired now is the time to see them changed. I highly recommend using the talk page there to drive them, pinging Alex Hollender.
