[REGRESSION 5.0.0(764)] Nearby cells don't update
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Steps to reproduce

  1. Launch app on poor network (e.g. NLC EDGE)
  2. Before random or nearby load:
    1. Scroll down to random (above nearby)
    2. Scroll down until first nearby cell is showing
  3. Wait

Expected results

Random & nearby eventually load, and nearby updates compasses & distances in real time.

Actual results

If random loads an article w/o a lead image, nearby sometimes doesn't update the cells in real time. Shown here by hard-coding random to Lesticus jacobsoni w/ NLC set to EDGE:

@JMinor For posterity, this could use a priority, parent, and release tag.

JMinor renamed this task from [REGRESSION 5.0.0(764)] Nearby cells don't update due to feed jumpiness(?) to [REGRESSION 5.0.0(764)] Nearby cells don't update.Mar 2 2016, 6:52 PM
JMinor triaged this task as High priority.

@MBinder_WMF triaged for 5.0 and High. Please parent under bug epic.

I don't have access to an NLC EDGE network, but I'm willing to see i I can find a poor connection somewhere. In the meantime, any suggestions for testing this?

Tested on iPad with iOS 9.2.1; this was a challenge to test because the signal quality varies, however it seems once or twice I was able to observe Nearby was updating in real time even when the Random Article had no lead image.

JMinor claimed this task.

{F3516691}Hi @Nicholas.tsg, you can test various connections using the "Link Conditioner" on your device. I'm attaching an animated gif here which shows how to turn it on and slow down your connection.
