Automatic summary is truncated, duplicated, sometimes irrelevant
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

With the new theme on the Wikimedia blog, automatic summaries are generated from the first few sentences of the text. I assume this is done only when a summary hasn't been manually provided.

The idea of the summary is great. However, the automatic summary duplicates the text, and sometimes truncates it in the middle of a sentence, which looks unprofessional.

Even without duplication and truncation, simply extracting the first paragraph (whether manually or automatically) would not be a silver bullet for generating a summary. I believe the best way to address this issue would be to not display the summary unless it has been manually curated.

Event Timeline

I noticed the same issue too and agree that not displaying autogenerated summaries might be the best solution.

This is not something we are going to be able to address at the moment, although I agree that this is incredibly suboptimal for old posts. I'm more than happy to fix posts on an individual basis at anyone's request.

@EdErhart-WMF: How exactly is this task waiting for further input (e.g. from its reporter or a third party)? Asking as the stalled task status was set but I don't see anything blocking someone to work on this?

We're working on getting the theme so we can tweak it in-house, so it's stalled for now, but we'll either be able to fix it or will have to decline as too difficult. It's too early to tell at this point.
