Notify editors that a new Wikipedia Library database is available to them
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Create a new Echo notification type, that gets sent to:

  • recently active editors, with a 6 month old account, and at least 500 edits

that (new) Wikipedia Library database access is available to them. (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/Databases)

This would require a new interface, in order to manually trigger a notification, hence is blocked by T58362: Allow creating custom Echo notifications

Quiddity renamed this task from Notify editors that new Wikipedia Library access is available to them to Notify editors that a new Wikipedia Library database is available to them.Apr 7 2016, 6:27 PM

Removing association with T58362 because that's not actually required: the request is not for manual notification sending but for automatic notifs to people who reach a certain age+editcount threshold. This could be done through autopromote conditions for example.

@Catrope Hmm, it would need to be triggerable "when a new database becomes available to everyone" though.
E.g. "2 weeks from now, a new partner gives Wikimedians access to a brand new database. The TWL leaders need to be able to tell all the editors about it."
How would the TWL leaders add the information about that new database to this notification?
The current list of databases is https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/The_Wikipedia_Library/Databases (~55 or so?) and a few changes (additions or removals) are made each quarter.

IIUC, the TWL leaders want a way to trigger a one-time notification, about a "new" database, to x thousand currently-eligible editors.

The other task (132084) would handle the use-case of automatically notifying "editors who have just passed the threshold" (and are hence now eligible for any and all existing TWL databases).

I'm still wondering if a notification is needed for that new database entry. If available ressources are updated quarterly, a newsletter is enough for announcement, no? I would tend to decline that request.

However, T132084: Notify editors that they are now eligible for the Wikipedia Library program is still eligible for a notification.

I believe (@Ocaasi can confirm) that the intent for this new notification is to reach everyone who does not read the newsletter. I.e. There are currently only ~430 subscribers to the newsletter (plus however many people see it in the pages/mailinglists it is posted to), whereas many thousands (?) of editors are eligible for access to each new database. Plus the newsletter has a long gap between each release.

Mmmh. Good point, but there is potentially the same expectation from some other initiatives: I only have grants or micro-grants, both from WMF or chapters, in mind. Both would also require that kind of notifications. How many notifications people will then receive?

I think there is two things to consider before we move forward:

  • which strategy do we have for requests like that?
  • how people know what is happening on their wiki (something new, something that requires action...)?

Agreed. And I agree that MediaWiki-extensions-Newsletter might solve this, once it is deployed, as it will enable vastly easier signup and less usertalkpage deluges.
