Review the inclusion of the Macro/Meme application in Wikimedia Phabricator
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

I think it's time to rediscuss the inclusion of the Memes application in our phabricator instance, This was previously discussed at T99345: Disable memes / image macros in Phabricator.

Some of the issues i'm currently seeing inculde:

  1. I'm yet to see how and/or been shown where they have been used effectively in bug discussions
  2. Upstream implementation Issues
  3. Copyright Issues. Out of all the memes, there are only two that have managed to include this information (Thanks @SamB and @Bawolff)

MZMcBride renamed this task from Review the inculsion of the Macro/Meme application to Review the inclusion of the Macro/Meme application in Wikimedia Phabricator.Apr 3 2016, 12:46 AM
  1. I understand your point, but it seems very likely to me that everyone knows when to (or to not) use them. This is not https://www.reddit.com/r/memes. Is there any proof that the application is currently harmful (i.e. frequently used in the wrong way)?
  2. Depends on upstream, we can't unfortunately do anything about that I guess.
  3. If you really think that this is a valid reason to remove the Macro application, then you should change this task to 'disable file uploads' (or open a new task with that subject). This is something that affects all image uploads, it isn't a problem that only affects Macro.

Previous discussion: T99345.

The macro extension is horrible for this reason. We are WIkimedia and should care about "free content" etc., and not a pirate party or something and disregard copyright. If one wants to upload a meme, they can use the normal photo uploads...disable it.

There could also have bugs in our ogg/ogv files, so disabling would sadly an overkill for users who wanna report bugs of em

How is that related to the use of the macro app?

I don't think there are new arguments on the table (and I'm also a bit torn on this). Thus I'm declining this lingering task with the given status quo.
