Better Feed layout for iPad
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Summary
Make better use of larger screen size to improve the feed browsing experience on iPads.

Proposed design - key points

  • Better use of screen real-estate by allowing feed to flow over 2-column cards on iPad portrait, showing more content and reducing scrolling,
  • Improved reading experience by splitting content so the wider left hand side column is used for 'editorial' type cards with more content (large images, lead paragraphs), whilst RHS narrower column is used for list content.
  • Search is more prominent – so users can begin a search faster
  • Clearer branding with the use of a full "Wikipedia" workmark
  • Overall hierarchy of top nav items remains consistent
  • Allows graceful reflow to single column layout if user activates Split View and the app width is reduced (only impacts iPad Pro, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4)

    • Today (Main page)

CC @JMinor: Is there a way to disable suggested articles on the iOS app? I know some people are uncomfortable with it or do not find it useful and it gives the impression that we're tracking what people read, which is not good.

Hi @Niharika

This ticket is specifically about iPad design, so lets take this convo to email or another ticket if you have more questions/concerns.

Generally we don't have a way or plan a way to "disable" recommendations. We may add that, but the concerns we're hearing from users are more about navigation and freshness of content. I'm more interested in making them useful than in turning them off :)

To be clear we also have explanatory text when the app starts for the first time, in our launch PR, as well as on MediaWiki that explains that we do NOT track users reading habits or build profiles of users to create recommendations. We can do more to better explain how we differ from other feeds online but anything that is personalized will always concern some users/volunteers, since it looks like "tracking".

@JMinor, alright, thanks for the clarification!

@RHo will there be a ipad landscape spec? or the feed is locked in to portrait mode?

@Nirzar – yes there will be a landscape spec. On rotation to landscape we will maintain the same two columns with 7:5 width ratios, with wider left and right margins.

Just added landscape to the mock as well.

Layout looks good. I've broken out the nav bar into a later task (once we have wordmark assets and updated search).
