Categorize wikimedia logos
Open, LowPublic

Description

We should categorize wikimedia logos based on the colors at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Red,_green,_and_blue

This way we can see which logos are in violation of the color policy and whcih ones are not.

@jayvdb I was looking over this, and found some issues I wasn't sure about:

  1. Categories like WIkimedia logo variants, Logo contests should be ignored right ?
  2. Should Files like File:Pov-ray-voorbeeld.jpg and File:%2Ciukroyj7u7.jpg be marked as "not logo" ? They are under the category Wikipedia Logos right now.
  3. What shold be done with this logo of a wikimedia hackathon ? Is this a valid logo ? File:Logo_Hackathon_2015_%C3%A0_Lyon.png
  4. A file like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Echo_(Notifications)_logo.svg) is not categorized correctly in the Category:Logos_of_Wikimedia right ?

With regards to red, green and blue, yes, they should mostly all be ignored, but they should be ignored because they dont have the right colors.
If they are R...G..B.., that is where the more interesting cases will be.

e.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikisource_happydoglogo_idea2a.png uses the colors and the Wikipedia logo.

logos in https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikimedia_logo_drafts and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Logo_contests with RGB but using the wrong shades of the colours should be identified. If they are slightly wrong colors, maybe we ask the authors to adjust the colours used.
If they are very wrong colours, they were probably not credible candidates in any logo competition, and maybe should be deleted.

Yea, they are more: 'Wikipedia fan art'?

Yea, I attended that hackathon, and have a shirt with a similar logo on it ;-)
How bad are the colors?

  1. A file like https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Echo_(Notifications)_logo.svg) is not categorized correctly in the Category:Logos_of_Wikimedia right ?

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Notifications_(Echo)-logo.png and https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:VisualEditor-logo.svg are a logo of a (notable) MediaWiki extension created by the WMF, so I guess they are OK in Logos of Wikimedia.

Sorry for asking stupidly - do I understand correctly that this task is about:

  • a wiki logo contest which lasts for a limited time?
  • RE-categorizing images that already are categorized in some way?

Sorry for asking stupidly - do I understand correctly that this task is about:

  • a wiki logo contest which lasts for a limited time?

Not about logo contests, except that I assume @AbdealiJK has astutely found that logos created during logo contests may frequently violate the visual brand colour policy.

  • RE-categorizing images that already are categorized in some way?

Yes.
Analyse files that are already categorised, in order to better understand how Commons categorisation is done on a very adhoc basis.
And an extra benefit is media using these colours are media about the soul of the community, which will help with community bonding.

@AbdealiJK: I am resetting the assignee of this task because there has not been progress lately (please correct me if I am wrong!). Resetting the assignee avoids the impression that somebody is already working on this task. It also allows others to potentially work towards fixing this task. Please claim this task again when you plan to work on it (via Add Action...Assign / Claim in the dropdown menu) - it would be welcome. Thanks for your understanding!
