Description

Short story
We need an icon to convey the idea of displaying nearby wiki articles on a map.

Long story
This icon may be used only for a map control if the prototype for Wikivoyage (T132971) gets positive feedback and a migration from the wmflabs-hosted maps to the Kartographer maps is approved.
The control associated with this icon does:

  • Zoom out a bit from the original area and the POIs on map
  • Removes existing POIs and replace them with one single POI for the current wikivoyage article.
  • Adds one POI per nearby wikivoyage article around the current wikivoyage article.
  • Toggling the control on/off will enable/disable this feature.

Here is the icon that was/is used for the wmflabs maps:

(Note: see example https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Salzburg#Get_around).

I did a very quick and early draft for the first version of the Wikivoyage prototype (T132971) :

(Note: the white circle around the dots may not be by design).

Questions
I'm looking for contribution, inspiration and feedback about:

  • How well can we convey the idea?
  • How well (or how bad) the initial draft works visually.
  • How well it fits in the general icon guidelines.

Event Timeline

JGirault renamed this task from Design Nearby Articles icon to Design *Nearby Articles* icon.May 24 2016, 12:47 AM

This is mostly pending some Iconography Design Guidelines.
I don't have a timeline for them (yet) so we may mark this ticket as resolved for now, and work on a second revision once we have official guidelines.

Note that to complete the work, we'll also need the icon process (T135081) to be defined.

Yurik subscribed.

I'm pretty happy with the icon you have there, so i will close it. Feel free to reopen.
