Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

It looks like, that suscribtion or unsubscription to some, maybe to all lists on lists.wikimedia.org doesnt work. You must ask and operator for a help. Could you have a look on it?

WFM. Which particular list you have issues with?

Please describe what "doesn't work" means exactly by providing exact steps to reproduce. Also see https://mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_report_a_bug - thanks!

Setting status to stalled as we're awaiting an answer by @Juandev...
Please reset the task status to open once answered.

So, for example if I want to unsubscribe from Wikimedia-l:

  1. I go to https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l
  2. in the area of "Change your settings or unsubscribe" I fill the dialog box with my e-mail address (that one, I use for Wikimedia-l) and click on "Unsubscribe and edit options"
  3. In the seccion "unsubscribe" I click on "unsubscribe" - there is a not "The confirmation email has been sent."
  4. 45 minutes have passed and the e-mail havent arrived.

Urgh, The Mailman software is extremely misleading here. If I follow your steps and enter a complete random email address like whatever@fooo.xyz, steps 1-3 still work. As I get:

The confirmation email has been sent. Wikimedia-l list: member options for user whatever@fooo.xyz

The problem might be

  1. an incorrect email address entered (mailing list administrators could check),
  2. your mail server having SPF/DKIM policies to not accept the email (Yahoo maybe?),
  3. your mail server considering it spam and marking it as such
  4. Wikimedia mail servers not sending out correctly (Operations team members could check).
  5. something else I've forgotten.

As the task summary also says that subscribing does not work, does that mean the problem is that you never receive a verification/confirmation email? Or what is the exact problem when trying to subscribe to a mailing list?

Keep in mind that all the settings for how exacly subscribing and unsuscribing works, what is needed, if it sends a confirmation etc, can and will be different for each individual list since list admins can configure alll that. So always be as specific as possible, and specify which list we are talking about. Then you might want to also contact the specific list admins or get them on this ticket.

If you still have a specific problem with subscribing/unsubscribing on wikimedia-l or elsewhere, please specificy which list and the email address used, then we could maybe check a bit more what is happening.

  1. well, they may or may not. They were helpful to list me manualy, but they were not helpful to unsubsribe me, just telling "oh we are accidently admins here, try it again and than come to us, or fil a bug report" But how many times I should do that? Ive already did that lot of times.
  2. Gmail doesn not recived it?
  3. Ive looked into the spam folder

Yes, the problem is I never recieve a verification e-mail.

Well, Iam having this problem for about 4 years on several wmf lists, so I am not sure if I have an energy to help you to debug it. I have complained that to wikimedia-l and a list admin probably removed me from that channel, but before they were coming with beaurocraticly issues.

So if I have a free weekend, we may have a look on that.

does that mean the problem is that you never receive a verification/confirmation email?

Yes, the problem is I never recieve a verification e-mail.

There is a setting for this in _each individual list_.

There is "welcome message"

Send welcome message to newly subscribed members?
(Details for send_welcome_msg)

and the equivalent to that the "goodbye message"

Text sent to people leaving the list. If empty, no special text will be added to the unsubscribe message.
(Edit goodbye_msg)

From https://wiki.list.org/DOC/Mailman%202.1%20List%20Administrators%20Manual

welcome_msg

When new members are subscribed to the list, either by their own action, or the action of a list administrator, a welcome message can be sent to them. The welcome message contains some common boilerplate information, such as the name of the list, instructions for posting to the list, and the member's subscription password. You can add additional information to the welcome message by typing the text into the welcome_msg text box. Note that because this text is sent as part of an email, it should not contain HTML.

send_welcome_msg

This flag controls whether or not the welcome message is sent to new subscribers.

goodbye_msg

Like the welcome_msg, a "goodbye" message can be sent to members when they unsubscribe from the list. Unlike the welcome message, there's no boilerplate for the goodbye message. Enter the entire goodbye message you'd like unsubscribing members to receive into the goodbye_msg text box.

send_goodbye_msg

This flag controls whether or not the goodbye message is sent to unsubscribing members.

Again, these are settings chosen by each individual list admin for each list, so you have to talk to specific lists, and we can't handle that globally.

It's not possible to debug without knowing which lists you are refering to. But if you give me a list of list names i can give you the values for those config options above.
