Redirect phabricator.mediawiki.org to phabricator.wikimedia.org
Open, LowestPublic

Description

"MediaWiki" and "Wikimedia" are often conflated when dealing with people not familiar to the projects.

It might be nice to redirect one to the other, like how we do with commons.wikipedia.org.

Event Timeline

Isn't commons.wikipedia.org just a historical thing?

Maybe we should get some actual numbers for these things instead of guessing how much it's used (for both of these things?)

Change 293464 had a related patch set uploaded (by Microchip08):
Redirect phabricator.mediawiki.org

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/293464

It looks like redirects existed for Bugzilla, so I guess you could call this a regression.

Yeah.

It looks like redirects existed for Bugzilla, so I guess you could call this a regression.

Maybe redirects such as this would be better analogies than commons.wikipedia.org:

$ curl -Is "https://bugs.mediawiki.org" | grep Location
Location: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/

The argument that wikimedia.org and mediawiki.org are confusing is very valid. I imagine some people are hesitant to add yet another hostname, though.

I don't like it very much, especially not in wikipedia.org. Where would we draw the line here before we add it to all domains we have? At the same time i can see that _maybe_ there are people trying these URLs., hence i think actual hard numbers should decide. And a decision from what point on it is "worth it". shrug...

Is there any way to know how many times someone tries to access (non-existing) phabricator.mediawiki.org ?

That doesn't resolve to the Wikimedia servers, so not at the moment. Could add it in DNS and I expect it'd serve the unconfigured domain error, but maybe the access logs would go to the analytics systems where you can find that info?
