I'm calling this resolved. Most wiki content has switched to Kartographer maps. Poimap2 is still in use (mostly at the top of articles via the indicator) and opens a link in an external map of https://wikivoyage.toolforge.org This is fine if the community wants to keep the overhead of maintaining that (which it seems they want to).
