Update search documentation to reflect how ? is treated
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

We really should mention that ? is a wildcard substitute for any character in one or more of the following pages:

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:CirrusSearch
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Searching

The CirrusSearch help page should probably have a link to the Searching page, right near the top.

Also, these pages don't appear to discuss how ? works, and probably should:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Searching
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Advanced_search

It looks like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Searching/Draft#Fuzzy_search.2C_wildcards.2C_and_stemming already covers ? pretty well.

debt moved this task from needs triage to This Quarter on the Discovery-Search board.

I've updated the docs at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Advanced_search, too.

The documentation at https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Searching is not for CirrusSearch, and so does not need updating.

I checked and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Searching/Draft#Fuzzy_search.2C_wildcards.2C_and_stemming is a little out of date—in addition to not having \? for ?, it has incorrect info on * (which cannot appear at the beginning of a word—though it must have been allowed at some point, because it was documented incorrectly on a couple of the other pages, too. Unless @Cpiral asks for assistance—which I'd be happy to provide—I'd leave the Draft alone.

I think we might be done.
