Warning: This is a ticket for option 2 of how to fulfill the wish of the technical wishlist. Option one would be to have a real feature that supports moving files from wikipedia to commons (T141867).

The http://tools.wmflabs.org/commonshelper/ seems to be a widely used tool for moving files from wikipedia to commons. The task of this ticket is to find out to what extent the tool currently supports:

• keeping the correct: file description history, file history, binary file history
• the username (history)

Please:

• Find out if the admin(s) of the tool would be open to us extending the tool to support the wished-for features
• How much prework (refactoring etc) would be needed to be able to implement the wished-for features
• An estimate of how much time it would take to implement the features
