First edit guided tour should use VE tab as anchor when available
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

The "first edit" guided tour triggered by URL parameter tour=firstedit (used by social media bots such as wpstubs) should use the VE tab as an anchor for the tooltip, when available.

Also, the copy in the first guider of the tour on English Wikipedia ("Edit the whole page") – a legacy of the tests run by the E3 team – looks inappropriate and should be changed to something more meaningful like "Edit this page" or "Edit this article".

They are currently separate (so the caller has to determine which to request), but there is also firsteditve (the VisualEditor variant of the firstedit tour). However, it doesn't look like that is compatible with Single Edit Tab (just filed T142447: Update VE tours for Single Edit Tab), so it no longer works.

The language team pushed back on the word 'article', wanting to generalize on 'page'. They did OK 'article' for Wikipedia, so we special-cased it on Wikipedia in WikimediaMessages. This would be easy to do for more keys (see transformKeyForGettingStarted in WikimediaMessages.hooks.php).

I suggest closing this task. The community will likely react negatively if you try to point guided tour to the secondary editor.

I believe there are only one or two small wikis that have requested Visual Editor as primary, and there are some single-edit-tab wikis subject to a bug which mistakenly categorized them as VE primary.
