Create wordmarks for all Wikipedia languages
Open, MediumPublic

Description

Problem

The wikipedia wordmarks used in reading products are not translated. we use Wikipedia english wordmark as a fallback. we should cater to everyone.

Solution

Create a repository of SVG files for the wordmark in all Wikipedia languages
This is the action outcome from the spike ticket T141458 and T171181

How to

We have an excel sheet with unique wordmarks and the instances of use.
There are 129 Unique Wordmarks They correspond to 300 projects

English wordmark is the highest frequency one which covers 87 projects

5-10 other wordmarks are used on approx 20-30 projects. Rest are unique wordmarks.

Process

Use the spreadsheet in finding which wordmarks are missing
See second sheet called "Worksheet"
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JXMMtlSrqbNb6YPKreaQ8zgRqKhaUruJwP5iXYSWG80/edit?usp=sharing

Use https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia/2.0#SVG to get the actual wordmark

If the wordmark is not available on commons, contact Chris to get it sorted

  • Use the wordmark template to generate the SVG
  • Put the SVG on Lingo/Dropbox
  • All Svgs will be uploaded to commons later

Tasks

  • Do the analysis of wordmarks
  • Assign 40 wordmarks to each designer
  • Create SVGs
  • Work with CE in posting these out before deployment to get more eyes on it
  • deploy them

o/ @RHo @Nirzar @Dbrant. Just a heads up that the devs just talked a little bit about this and we'd like to agree on the technical implementation in conjunction with the design and product goals. This means that different assets may be needed. If you find yourself doing a bunch of manual work to generate one for each language, please wait until the implementation is decided upon so we can be sure that the assets generated are the ones that will be needed. Some implementations mentioned were: HTML rendering with system font, SVGs / PNGs bundled, SVGs / PNGs downloaded remotely as needed, and any combination.

@Dbrant sidenote: whatever method is chosen should probably replace all usages of the wp_stylized string (unless we actually use wp_stylized for this).

This task seems like one that almost has too many solutions and stalled out. The effort seems like an improvement to me. We should decide on an approach and move forward with it.

hey @Niedzielski – this has been on the backburner for a bit, but I had put together a spreadsheet with all the language wikis and documented the corresponding wordmark translations.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JXMMtlSrqbNb6YPKreaQ8zgRqKhaUruJwP5iXYSWG80/edit?usp=sharing

This reduces the number of assets we will need to create substantially since same translations can use the same asset (eg., the english WIKIPEDIA wordmark can be used for 88 language wikis)

Hoping to ramp up production work soon.

Thanks @RHo! Remember that we have translations already in the app if we go the HTML rendering with system or bundled font route (or use this as a backup).

Note that we have a ticket and volunteer patch to update Arabic on iOS: T165085

Not sure if the "master" wordmark also needs update, but wanted to link, just in case.

@JMinor ahh the splashscreen was a different issue :( it was made pre-wordmark work. we can fix that in an ad-hoc way and I actually know why that issue is there. it's the SVG export issue from sketch. I will coordinate with @cmadeo to resolve that separately. thanks for the ping here!

This problem doesnt still solve. This case is there some years. When will it solve?

@RHo: Hmm, all items in the table in the task description have a checkbox. As this task is assigned to you, are you still working (or still plan to work) on this task? If you do not plan to work on this task anymore, please remove yourself as assignee (via Add Action...Assign / Claim in the dropdown menu) so in theory, others could work on it. Thanks!

hi @Aklapper - the table in the phab description only contains a small subset of wordmarks based on IIRC specific requests from community members from those Wikis, the status for the entire set is shown in the linked spreadsheet and I'll unassign myself now in case others have time to tackle the rest. Thanks for the nudge!
