Currently, the math extension returns very similar error messages for fairly different issues, which is not helpful for editors. As a result, tasks like T136812 (which are primarily concerned with a backend service issue) get a lot of reports about issues with MathJax / content compatibility.

We should more clearly separate those two cases so that

• editors know clearly when the issue is with a math construct not being supported in MathJax, or
• there was a backend service outage.
