User can not confirm his e-mail address
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

I am not sure where to report this problem, so I do it here. I was contacted by User:Mayfat who is unable to confirm his e-mail address. He receives confirmation e-mails and clicks on the confirmation link, but it does not produce the desired result, and the status of his e-mail address remains 'uncofirmed'. What should one do in this situation?

I am not sure if it is related to MediaWiki-extensions-BounceHandler in any case, though!

Is there any time frame for this request? I mean, it is a straight-forward problem, which seems to worry the user a lot. He will simply stop contributing Wikimedia projects if this problem is not solved. Can someone go to the database and set "e-mail address confirmed" manually?

Doesn't seem to be. No sign of this users email in the the BounceHandler logs

FWIW, he's not using Yahoo or any of the usual suspects

No, there's no point manually doing that. In the case of it being a BounceHandler issue, it would just be unconfirmed. And it doesn't help fix whatever underlying issue there may be

What result does it provide? What does it say when he clicks the link? Does he receive an error?

Reedy removed a project: Mail.

@Atsirlin: Could you answer the questions in the last comment please?

He told me that he did not receive any error. It looked like the confirmation was successful, but in reality it was not, and he was not allowed to send e-mails via wiki.

I have to admit, though, that I did not have any contact with the user in the last 2 months. I think he has left in a sincere belief that Wikimedia admins and techs are extremely inefficient if they can't solve such a simple problem.

Simple is a matter of perspective. In other cases, such as when Yahoo blacklist us, it's anything but simple to fix

Also, the assumption that it is our fault, and ours alone is probably similarly misguided; have they also contacted their mail provider and then left them because they can't solve it?

Another thing that I found in e-mails from this user is the following message that appears when he tries to send an e-mail through wiki:

Your registered email address maayyy@list.ru has been unsubscribed due to multiple message delivery failures. You can verify your email address again.

I guess that's all you can get from the user's side. And it has to be in some logs on the wiki side too.

Got a rough date when that occurred?

This is from his e-mail from August 12. And he first reported the problem on August 8

BounceHandler.log-20160813.gz: host mxs.mail.ru [217.69.139.150]: 550 5.7.1 This message was not accepted due to domain owner DMARC policy (RFC 7489) https://help.mail.ru/mail-help/postmaster/dmarc

So, at this point, it's his mail provider rejecting the email, not a problem with WMF not sending them

However, it's possibly due to the way WMF sends emails, and there might be another issue about the emails are "sent" from the senders email address...
