BUG: Top read and continue widgets showing up blank
Closed, ResolvedPublic3 Estimated Story Points

Description

See screenshots.
NB: The names of the widgets also appear to be showing older names (afaik we had changed them to Top read and Continue reading respectively).

Occurring on
Device 1: iPhone 6S Plus
iOS version: 10.0.1 (14A403)
Wikipedia 5.2.0 (939)

Device2: iPad mini 2

This persists even after uninstalling then reinstalling.

Event Timeline

@RHo does it persist after removing and re-adding the widgets or just when uninstalling and re-installing the app?

@RHo what about after turning the phone off then back on?

It looks like they're in a state where the OS hasn't even requested an update, so I'm not sure what we can do to work around it.

Ahah, of course turning it on and off worked!

However, I seem to have picked up a separate issue with the iPad restart where it is showing placeholder text for "Title" and "Text".

I'll look into the Continue reading issue

JMinor moved this task from Needs Triage to Bug Backlog on the Wikipedia-iOS-App-Backlog board.

Testing Criteria:

  1. View the Top Read and Continue Reading widgets after doing a clean install of the app
  2. Ensure the widget titles are "TOP READ" and "CONTINUE READING" (on an english device)
  3. Ensure the widgets don't show placeholder text such as "text" or "label"

Testing with iPhone 6S (iOS 10.0.1) and Wikipedia 5.2.0 (939). After a clean install of the app, Top Read is empty and Continue Reading/Where You Left Off shows placeholder text "Title", "Text" and "Label".

This needs to be tested with 5.2.1 instead of 5.2.0

Testing with iPhone 6S (iOS 10.0.1) and Wikipedia 5.2.1 (942) app. This is fixed now as there is content in the Top Read and (if app is closed on an article) Continue Reading widgets.
