Currently (as of 11. Oct. 2016), the citoid gadget displays an icon (Magnifier glass) aside to the add reference icon.

If a user want's to create a reference it is confusing to have two actions that do (potentially) the same thing.

My suggestion would be to have just one add reference and integrate the citoid gadget as a helper.

So one rough idea would be this:

(adding the citoid gadget in the top bar of the reference).
The naming could be different and may also reflect that currently it works only for URLs.
