| Resolved | mschwarzer | T149805 Clarify WMF involvement in "Improve mobile recommendations in Android app" |
Event Timeline
As @leila said in T143197#2752764, this experiment requires that someone in the WMF needs to "own" it. In order to make that happen, I would like to know how we can support that or who to contact.
The parent ticket is updated to clarify the project goal. Regarding the methodology, we want to test the evaluation with already existing data. But the problem here is that the existing click-through data already requires productive shell access, which we don't have yet.
Thanks for filing this task to clarify. Sadly, Discovery cannot own this project right now for the reasons described in T143197#2748921. This project is something we will consider for future quarters. We'll let you know if there are any changes on our end.
@Deskana Most of the work regarding CirrusSearch and Android is already done. Thus, I think we can keep the work load of your team at a minimum. In other words, I would be happy to do as much work as possible.
@leila can you please be as specific as possible what you mean by "WMF" i.e. does it inculde "WMDE" and how you define "own".
My experience as a volunteer contributor was that all you need to do is to make a pull request and find someone to review it. I did that several times see for example https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Math
I could not tell who "owns" the math code.
@mschwarzer I don't have an NDA and I don't really understand why an NDA would be needed for this project. From a research perspective, it would be best if all the algorithms and the aggregated and anonymized data would be available to the public.
@Physikerwelt sure. Read "own" as "responsible for". It doesn't refer to the code/process belonging to person x in the WMF in the general definition of the word, but it does mean that person x is responsible for reviewing it and making sure the output of the code won't be problematic from the privacy pov, for example.
Whether someone from WMDE can be the responsible person for this project is a good question I don't have a clear answer for (as I don't know who has access to what data). In general, I'd think that if there is someone in WMDE who has access to the data you're interested in, that person knows whether he/she can help you with this request.
A side note: do you want for you, mschwarzer, and I to set up a 15-min call to talk about this task? If so, please email me a few times that work for the two of you at leila@wikimedia.org and I'd be happy to talk with you in more details.
