[beginner] [recurring] Set up your MediaWiki development environment and upload a screenshot of a MediaWiki extension
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

This is a placeholder task for the list of potential tasks when applying as an organization for Google Code-in.

This is already an advanced beginner task (we also offer beginner tasks that are way easier and take less time, but this task is very useful if you plan to continue with coding related tasks.)

Event Timeline

Should it really be limited to extensions installed on Wikimedia sites?

@Tgr: For the beginning I'd propose so, as I can imagine running into enough issues when trying to install a "less popular and less maintained" extension (and how would I as a newcomer find out?).
We could always drop that requirement if the task becomes very popular.

WikiApiary has a list of extensions by popularity, I was thinking of providing that list. There is always the danger of an extension being popular but still not working with the newest MediaWiki version, but finding that out is even more useful than taking screenshots :-)

Invalidating this Phabricator task as it was only a placeholder when Google wanted to see what we have in mind, and there are many instances available on the GCI site for students. :)
