Document the difference in aggregate data on wikistats and wikistats 2.0
Closed, ResolvedPublic3 Estimated Story Points

Description

We are aggregating and preparing to release data as part of our first vertical slice through the wikistats 2.0 project. Our source is different from the dumps that wikistats uses currently, so we need to explain that difference and why we think it's safe to release the data. Do this on a wiki page and collaborate with Community Liasons.

@Quiddity, can we ping you to look at this with us? I know you're super swamped doing a million things, happy to ping someone else too.

Possibly! Quick clarification questions:

  • Where/who - IIUC, that page is intended to be an announcement, and needs to summarize [various changes], to a broad range of user demographics. Is that correct? If so, where is it going apart from the mailing lists? E.g. will it replace the message at the top of https://stats.wikimedia.org/EN/Sitemap.htm etc?
  • When - What is the Final/Target Deadline for getting this info broadcast? (I.e. "Today/A week from now/This quarter"?)
  • What/how - Time-needed estimate? (1 hour? 4 hours? more?) -- For context: Is this request just to sanity-check/proofread the info in that one page, verifying that it makes sense to a relative outsider, and that relevant links are included for "more info"? Or, are there other pages that need to be analyzed in conjunction? (I can help relatively soon (maybe tomorrow) with this single page. But if I'd need to read through the /Future_per_report page and learn all about Data_Lake (and etc) then I couldn't help for at least a week or two and might suggest pinging a different CL if he's free.)

Thanks! (Also: Feel free to update the description instead of replying directly, if the task is bigger than I guessed. :)

This page is part of a bigger communication, I'll try to summarize here but maybe a meeting would be useful too. What we have to announce:

  • Wikistats is being updated (already done with the current banner)
  • The data used to compute the metrics is changing
  • The UI for the new wikistats is being designed, we've got some basic early wireframes and we want input

What we want to communicate:

  • Anytime: the data source explanation mentioned in this task
  • After February 1st: the design is up for community review and input, tracking in T156287

We hope to work with Communications and Community Liasons (C&CL) to do this the right way. Our audience is basically everyone currently using Wikistats and anyone who is interested in using the new version. We have decent contact with these folks on the current Wikistats "what reports should we keep" poll page and the analytics and research lists. So that would be where we start the conversation. Updating the banner on wikistats would be a good idea too, though in all these matters we defer to C&CL.

  • When - What is the Final/Target Deadline for getting this info broadcast? (I.e. "Today/A week from now/This quarter"?)

No strict deadline, but starting now would be good so we can iterate if we need. We may do a few rounds of Design feedback depending on how it goes.

I'm ok doing most of the communicating myself if you think I can be trusted. If you think it's risky to release my brutish sensibility into the wild, I'm happy to pass all text through C&CL as well, and wait for availability. The text will be brief for the datasource conversation and for the UI / Design conversation it'll be a lot more. One article for each of the wireframes in this design: https://projects.invisionapp.com/share/WV9U6BK4T#/screens. But nobody expects C&CL to read through the Data_Lake and Future_per_report stuff, I'll manage all that and update based on feedback from the community.

Thank _you_! :)

I am afraid that the answers were not direct enough, so I am still unclear about what it is that you think you need from us and when.
I can help review specific texts if you provide links and explain intended use. If you need anything more than this, the request needs to be clearer.

Maybe a meeting would be easier then? Maybe our request is just getting lost in too much documentation?

OK, I'll try and book a slot with you. :)

Turns out that what this team needs ATM is actually related to T156287. What we will do is sending a MassMessage to people who previously showed interest in Wikistats 2.0 (+ a few specific mailing lists, and the banner on the stats site itself). I will help them review the request for feedback and I will probably also be the one who sends it. Because of some rigid deadlines that they have, I'm fine with providing some help at this time.

Milimetric set the point value for this task to 3.

Here's the message. Dan will send something similar to the Research and Analytics teams and will also take care of the banner. I'm done!

I also checked after a week and provided some advice, our intervention during this Phase 1 is not anticipated.

Thanks @Elitre. For Phase 2, we added the planned March 3rd - March 10th consultation on this page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Community_Engagement/Calendar. If I should open a phab task or anything else, please let me know.
