Enable visual editor in Wikiprojects spaces on English Wikipedia

Description

Please enable VE in Wikiproject spaces on English language Wikipedia

One of the main reasons for this is that tables are an amazing way to organise work and are easy to edit in VE but much much more difficult to edit in Source Editor

There's no namespace called "Wikiproject". So AFAIK if you want to enable VE in wikiprojects, it should be enabled in the entire Wikipedia namespace. It was already once enabled, but the decision was made without opinions in the discussion, so it was after few days disabled. T100067

I don't really understand, but does this mean if I want VE to be enabled in Wikiprojects I have to get them enabled in all Wikipedia: namespaces? That sounds like a hard thing to do, I just want them for Wikiprojects where they would be super useful :(

Is it possible to enable it for all pages starting with Wikipedia:WikiProject ?

@Stryn is correct, we can only enable the visual editor in whole namespaces at a time. Right now the Wikipedia: ("project") namespace is not enabled by default, as most wikis (including the English Wikipedia) do a substantial amount of signed editing there, and the visual editor is not appropriate for discussions.

You could create a new namespace for wikiprojects (which some wikis have done) and enable it there, but we'd normally expect to see a community discussion ahead of making that kind of change. Sorry I can't be of more help.

@Jdforrester-WMF thanks for your reply, a couple of questions:

  • How much work would be needed to allow turning VE on just for Wikiprrojects on en.wiki?
  • Can you give examples of other wikis that put Wikiprojects somewhere else?
  • Do you know what a reasonable approach would be to actually moving all Wikiprojects to a new name space?
  • Has turning on VE but less obvious (e.g the little unmarked pencil the Source Editor toolbar) been discussed as an option?
  • Are their plans to expand the functionality of VE to make it suitable for discussion pages?

Thanks again

John

@Jdforrester-WMF thanks for your reply, a couple of questions:

  • How much work would be needed to allow turning VE on just for Wikiprrojects on en.wiki?

That would slow down every page load for every reader, let alone editor, on every wiki. I'm afraid I would not allow such a change to go ahead.

  • Can you give examples of other wikis that put Wikiprojects somewhere else?

Sure. For instance, the Polish Wikipedia did this — https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiprojekt:Rocznice or https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikiprojekt:Racib%C3%B3rz for instance.

  • Do you know what a reasonable approach would be to actually moving all Wikiprojects to a new name space?

It's not too hard for us to migrate all pages called "Wikipedia:Wikiproject *" to "Wikiproject:*" but I'm not sure if it's been done before.

  • Has turning on VE but less obvious (e.g the little unmarked pencil the Source Editor toolbar) been discussed as an option?

No.

  • Are their plans to expand the functionality of VE to make it suitable for discussion pages?

No, see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Flow#If_you_are_not_working_on_Flow.2C_will_the_visual_editor_be_enabled_on_talk_pages.3F

Thanks @Jdforrester-WMF , really helpful, two more follow ups:

  • Where would be best to propose the idea of adding VE on Wikipedia: pages to show up as the pencil (two mini questions, what is that configuration called? and is it possible to enable it in that way for Wikipedia: pages only?)
  • What would be the process of proposing moving Wikiproject pages to a special Wikiproject: namespace? Also where would I start?

Thanks a lot

FYI I started a proposal here for VE to be enabled on Wikipedia: namespace pages in the same way as it is done on Wikidata

Looks like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)/Archive_136#Enable_Visual_Editor_for_Wikipedia:_namespace_pages_in_the_same_way_as_Wikidata_has_added_VE_(a_small_pencil_icon_inside_the_Source_editor_editing_window) never received any feedback.

I'm boldly declining this task as tasks should not be "stalled" for many years. If this is still wanted, please feel free to reopen this task (by setting the status of this Phabricator task back to "Open" via the Add Action...Change Status dropdown) once community agreement has been found. Thank you for your understanding!
