Don't show the welcome message unless it has a "switch to visual editing" button
Closed, DuplicatePublic

Description

New logged-in editors are given a plausibly useful popup, giving them a choice to continue wikitext editing or to switch to Visual Editor.

I just clicked edit while logged out and I was given an utterly useless popup. It contained a single option to continue editing. It was a pure nuisance popup, delaying my access to the edit area.

The popup should not appear when it has no useful information and it only has a single pointless option to continue.

(edit:)
As a logged in user go to a community-page on wiki I never visited before. For example Village Pump at HawWiki. Click edit source. I am given a useless popup with only an option to continue.

  1. Do not create a useless popup on pages where wikitext editor is the only option.
  2. Skip popup on wikis that do not have single edit tab enabled. (There are already explicitly two edit links.)
  3. I know this is a separate issue, but this is Yet Another very annoying SUL failure. It gets very annoying having to turn off Media Viewer whenever I visit a different language of Wikipedia, and having to click past this popup over and over is a pointless annoyance.

Event Timeline

Cannot reproduce. In a private window in Firefox 51, I get two options on en.wikipedia.org:

@Alsee: Please provide clearer steps to reproduce (including an URL / web address) if my steps were wrong, and/or attach a screenshot. Thanks!

When I log out it is still remembering not to give me any popup, even when I clear cookies.

However I was able to reproduce it on a different computer. I went to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Requests_for_closure I scrolled down to a random section, and I clicked the section-edit link. I got a popup with just one option.

@Aklapper I just had it happen again. I was able to get a screenshot this time:

@Aklapper I expanded the task in the description, and I see that this still hasn't been triaged.

Jdforrester-WMF renamed this task from Skip popup when it is pointless to Don't show the welcome message unless it has a "switch to visual editing" button.Mar 3 2017, 10:07 PM

The principal purpose of the welcome message is to welcome people. The editor mode switch button is a nice extra, but not the most important part of the functionality, and not the main reason we have it. IP editors get welcomed only once unless they clear their cookies or edit less frequently than once a month (I think), neither of which are common.
