DonationInterface (with 8 main contributors according to the docs, and 31 contributors in total) is the more, fully-fledged and more flexible version of Donate created by @georgebarnick, and it's being used on one or more Wikimedia projects which is an indication that it's most likely very stable and safe to use. Do we want to consider switching over, and deprecate our own extension?
