[FEATURE REQUEST] Tabbed Browsing
Open, LowPublicFeature

Description

From OTRS

To whom it may concern,

I'd really love to use the Wikipedia app more often, but I don't because it's not possible
to open tabs from hyperlinks.

Since ever, one of the best things of Wikipedia is the fact I can jump from one article to
another opening them in new tabs, so I can read them whenever I want. That's why I always
end up learning so many things!

But within the app, I can't open a new article from the one I'm reading in a separate tab,
so I could keep it until I finish the current article. I think this is the downside of the
app, and that's why I end up browsing within Google Chrome and not taking advantage of the
app.

Please, I'm sure that me and lots of people would be so happy if we could open articles in
tabs so we can read them later. Anyways, congratulations for your great work, the app it's
still amazing!

Greetings from Barcelona!

Daniel

Event Timeline

from App Store review:

I don't even need to elaborate, do I? C'mon. Tabbed browsing so I can open all the pages I want to look at later when I'm going through an article. Honestly. I'm frankly stunned this isn't an option. Does nobody else end up wanting to read various other articles hyperlinked from whatever article they're reading at the moment? Without losing their place in the original, and being able to look at more than one article at a time?
Dear Wikipedia Team,

First I have to praise you for your excellent work. I use Wikipedia daily and I could
not work without it anymore.
I am currently using both your Android and iOS app and I have come to realize, that
they are a bit different. While the iOS app is very visually pleasing and easier to
navigate, the android app allows for better multitasking with its tab function.
My guess is, that the android and iOS developers are different teams, but I would like
to propose the suggestion to implement this tab function into the iOS app. Furthermore
expand on it and allow for splitscreen view or some other kind of picture-in-picture
view. This could further improve the productivity potential for the Wikipedia app.
Maybe its also possible to bring some of that beautiful design language from the iOS
app to android.
I myself am not a programmer, so I can only image what I am asking for is a lot of
work and not as easy as it seems due to other factors. You probably also thought
about. I just wanted to share my opinion.
So have a nice day and keep up the excellent work!

It would be really nice to have multiple tabs on the iPad app as you can on then android
app. I usually open linked articles in new tabs so can read them after reading the
current article.

I have a suggestion for the app [...] maybe it is possible to open several tabs like in a browser.

Recapping some thoughts from our planning meeting and some of my own thoughts post-planning:

This is not unheard of on the platform (Safari has long had tabbed browsing), but some careful thought would need to be made on what this means for our form of navigation. Users currently can build a navigation stack of many different types of screens (say, Settings > User talk page > Diff screen > In-app web view > Article > Article talk page, etc). Would each of those screens need the ability to open in a different tab? Or only articles? We also would need to custom build this UI ourselves - there's no component that does this work for us as far as I know.

We also may want to consider alternative system-supported abilities so that the feature feels at home - iPadOS multi-windowing support that we're not taking advantage of, for example.

+1 user through our support email:

Hello,

I switched from android to iOS a while ago, and while I generally have come to prefer iOS, one of the things that I miss from android is tabs in the Wikipedia app. Is there some reason there’s no tab feature in iOS? Seems like a strange thing to be missing.

I'm probably a bit late to the party. But another option in that regard - at least on iPadOS - could be to allow for multiple windows. This would make it possible to put two Wikipedia app windows next to each other in order to share the same screen. As of now a split screen can only contain one Wikipedia window, the other one has to be of another app.

This would already be of great help when one wants to research some background information while reading an article.

Just a thought, since it may be less hassle than a tabbed browser ...

Hello,
I’m not sure if this is the correct place but it seems to be the only option I can find so here goes.
I’ve used Wikipedia for over a decade however I recently switched to an iPhone from Samsung and using the Wikipedia app in iOS I’m frustrated to no end as I can’t for the life of me figure out how to open extra tabs lol
I’m sure there’s a very simple way to do but I just can’t figure it out if you could please let me know that would be amazing.
Thanks so much, Trent Clark
