Edit summary should allow pipe tricks
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Good day,

It's hard to explain, please see attached screen capture, but edit summary doesn't allow pipe tricks. In a nutshell, [[User:Benoit Rochon|]] will not automatically generate [[User:Benoit Rochon|Benoit Rochon]].

I know it is no big deal, but that is annoying me for years!!!

Best regards.

No. T7004 is about the content, this is about the edit summary.

We're not going to support this, I'm afraid. There are a handful of sort-of wikitext contexts (edit summaries, log entries, citations, and galleries), all of which do not support most of wikitext and many of which support almost none of it. I appreciate that this complexity is confusing and not perfect for users. However, each deviation has its reason.

For edit summaries, I think this is mostly because you cannot subsequently edit them to fix errors, so magic alteration of user input is a bad idea, and because there's a length limit which the pipe trick and other expansion statements might exceed in a way that the user couldn't tell before pressing 'publish'. I do not think that the engineering and design effort to support this use case is justifiable, sorry.
