Research heritage data from Finland
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Finland has never participated in WLM, so it has no data in the database. Look into the possibility of importing publicly available data about intangible cultural heritage directly into Wikidata.

What data is out there that we could use?

Ping @Susannaanas -- has there been any sort of project on Finnish Wikipedia / by Wikimedia Suomi using this data? Do you know of any open data initiatives on the part of Museovirasto?

Event Timeline

Hi! The WLM project is about to launch, WMFI will be applying for funding for a coordinator. Museiverket is a partner in this, and they will look into licensing issues for the purpose of releasing data in Wikidata. I'll subscribe WMFI contacts to this ticket.

Susanna do you have an idea when Museiverket is planning to look at the licensing change and when you will have the data?

Have you planned to work on this data directly? That would help WMFI in their process. If you got this data now, when would you be able to have it in Wikidata?

Yes, if we got the data, we could process it and upload it to Wikidata.

Least part of the RKY and Muinaisjäännösrekisteri data can be downloaded from here ( I didn't check if the long descriptions were in zip files too or was it just map+metadata). Downloadable datasets itself are finnish only and file "Tietotuotemääritettely_DATASETNAME.pdf" contains information about the content and I think that most useful part is the paragraph "4 Tietosisällön ja rakenteen kuvailu" which contains diagrams about the data in the zip files.

The issue is that the data is not CC0 licensed. We would have imported them long ago if it was. And as we are progressing in collaboration with them, we would not like to just ingest it without asking. I think agreeing on using the DB partially may qualify for not being copyright protected.

Hi! Great that I got a ping in my mailbox about this!

There are several categories of data that this can refer to. The buildings (monuments) data is likely something that Wikimedia Finland is interested in continuing work with. The datasets mentioned in the original post have all been imported to Wikidata.

AvoinGLAM is interested in working with information about Finnish GLAMs this year. If you have outstanding tasks re: Finland about that, let's chat about that.

Thank you @Susannaanas ! I'll shoot you an email about this :)
