'Search for a language' - discrepancy between automatic fill-in suggestions and the suggestions from the drop-down list
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

Somewhat related to T156313: 'Search for a language' should indicate when there is no match for the search .

In 'Search for a language' type 'Bor' (no quotes). The automatic fill-in will present a different suggestion from what the list of suggestions presents.

The autocompletion supports all languages, but the list shows results in autonyms. I think this is by design, but I let @Pginer-WMF comment.

The language selector tries to make input flexible for the user so that they can type the language they are looking for in the language the want. When switching languages from English to Spanish, searching for either "spanish " or "español" makes sense and both should be supported.

In some cases this probably goes too far and the user receives unexpected results. There is a ticket about that: T137866: Adjust autocompletion in language selection to avoid unexpected language names

Amire80 moved this task from Backlog to Appearance and design on the UniversalLanguageSelector board.

In principle, this is not a problem. The autocompletion and the actual result may be different.

It can be improved, but that's discussed here: T137866: Adjust autocompletion in language selection to avoid unexpected language names.
