A recent change (T156084) added an offline notice to the link preview with a prominent "add to reading list" button. Since we currently show links to missing articles as we have no way of identifying them in Parsoid HTML, this makes it likely that users will inadvertently save nonexistent articles to reading lists.

FWIW there are good reasons to advertently save non0existant pages.
I personally have 3 use cases for pages that do not exist (that I have been using with Gather and my React prototypes).
- pages I plan to create at some time in the future.
- On wikivoyage I've created trip itineraries and included places too small to have their own Wikivoyage list
- I write a lot and usually group ideas together for things I'm working on.. sometimes I add words that don't have pages (although this could be folded into description if I forced too)
