Provide jessie (or later) grid compute on Tool Labs
Closed, InvalidPublic

Description

I want to use webpack in the shell on Tools Labs, but it requires a decent node.js version. According to T159368, that's not feasible ATM. But kubernetes uses Debian Jessie, so such installations are available. Could we have a Jessie instance as a grid "-release" option, so I can run webpack there? (webpack should run continuously in the background for development anyway, so grid is really the option of choice)

It turns out that jessie doesn't ship a modern nodejs either. The WMF repo does include a backport from somewhere though of 6.x (currently 6.9.1~dfsg-1+wmf1) that is used for our production nodejs services on Jessie.

Asking for Jessie grid engine exec nodes is proposing a particular solution rather than stating a problem. It seems the core problem here and in T159368 is that the version of nodejs that is offered on the job grid (and in kubernetes according to T155063) is old and missing features that people need. We should probably focus on that issue first before wandering off into the much larger problem of introducing a different base distribution for grid engine exec nodes.

Figured out a way to do it with the "n" node manager. Clunky, but it works.
