Reach out to 3D communities about 3D file support on Commons
Open, LowPublic

Description

In T158830 there were a few suggestions to reach out to communities that have 3D files to make them aware of the feature on Commons and encourage their participation. This is a task to track communities and organizations we may wish to approach.

Ping @Sadads - Hey, do you know of any other GLAM groups that might be interested in contributing 3D files on Commons?

The Musée Saint-Raymond of Toulouse (France) has models on Sketchfab. I understand these are .obj but I presume they can be converted? I just sent an e-mail to our contact there :)

It would be nice to get support in popular 3d-printing software (that already handles STL files) with an option to "Publish to Wikimedia Commons" directly from the software. Perhaps the open source project Cura would be interested in that?

Hey @CKoerner_WMF I shared the original conversation on GLAMWiki GLobal! I can do a little bit of probing though to figure out if there is more going on.

@Pharos might want to include the Met: http://www.metmuseum.org/blogs/digital-underground/posts/2013/3d-printing

Besides the Smithsonian, I am not sure who close to us has substantial 3d materials (though I can probe on twitter to see if that finds anyone?)

Just an update that there are several potential options here, plus we're getting closer to deployment and will be meeting with Comms soon.

Ok, so support for 3D is now on Commons. Huzzah. Now I'm not sure I'm the best person to handle this outreach and could use some guidance. :) What do you all think should happen?

There hasn't been much discussion on this effort in the last few months. I'm un-assigning myself. If you need CL support for a specific effort, please let us know.

Sketchfab have created the option for open licenses that creators can use on their models. They range from CC0 to various permutations of BY/ND/SA, e.t.c. and to closed licenses.
